Preventing Pickleball Injuries

Pickleball is a popular sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It can be played both indoors and outdoors on a court that is smaller than a tennis court, making it a great option for people of all ages and skill levels. While pickleball is generally considered a safe and low-impact sport, there are still some common injuries that players should be aware of.

  1. Sprains and strains

Like any sport that involves running and jumping, pickleball players are at risk for sprains and strains. These injuries typically occur in the ankles, knees, and wrists and can range from mild to severe. To prevent sprains and strains, players should warm up before playing and wear supportive shoes.

  1. Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a common injury among pickleball players, especially those who use a lot of topspin. It is a type of repetitive stress injury that occurs when the tendons in the elbow become inflamed. To prevent tennis elbow, players should use proper technique and consider using an elbow brace.

  1. Rotator cuff injuries

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. Injuries to the rotator cuff can occur when players swing their paddles too hard or when they hit the ball at an awkward angle. To prevent rotator cuff injuries, players should focus on proper technique and avoid overexerting their shoulders.

  1. Blisters

Pickleball players are also at risk for blisters, especially on their feet and hands. These painful sores can make it difficult to play and can take a long time to heal. To prevent blisters, players should wear comfortable shoes and gloves that fit well.

  1. Back pain

Pickleball requires players to bend and twist their bodies, which can put a strain on their backs. Back pain can range from mild to severe and can affect a player's ability to play. To prevent back pain, players should focus on proper technique and consider doing exercises to strengthen their core muscles.

Avoiding Pickleball Injuries
Consider good quality sports equipment and proper form (there are always training clinics to be found when starting out) to safely and comfortably enjoy pickleball.
  1. Regular Exercise - Ensure you exercise regularly and stimulate all the muscles in your body - not just by playing pickleball but jogging, yoga or going to the gym.
  2. Diet - Follow a healthy diet to improve your health, lower your risk of a potential injury and allow you to enjoy pickleball games.
  3. Water - Maintaining hydration levels is an essential element of everyday life on and off of the pickleball court. Your body struggles to regulate heat without proper hydration.
  4. Stretching - As with any exercise, a decent warmup is essential to prevent muscle strains and lower your overall risk of injury.
  5. Footwear - Supportive shoes can help lower your risk for potential injuries, including sprains, strains and meniscal tears. Wear shoes that fit correctly and give you support will keep your body safe from harm. Select shoes made specifically for tennis or pickleball players.
Magnesium - When you recover after exercise, magnesium keeps on working. It helps relax the muscles and prevent them from cramping or spasming. It also helps replenish red blood cells, which have been hard at work providing your body with oxygen during exertion.

7. MSM - A form of organic sulphur which has been used by professional athletes for its nutritional support of their overall performance. MSM supports healthy and flexible cell structures and can help reduce the inflammation of muscle tissue and can offset muscle soreness and joint pain caused by inflammation.
