Healing Foods

A great deal can be said about food and eating well. As the very wise Hippocrates once said, Food is Medicine. Hippocrates who strongly believed that eating wholesome food was the basis for good health, got it in a nutshell.

He was also very passionate in his belief that you could heal yourself with certain foods. His words specifically were, Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food.

In keeping with Hippocrates philosophy we have put together a few suggestions of foods that possess a variety of healing properties.

Tumeric Do you have Inflammation? Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric and has some potent anti-inflammatory powers coupled with some powerful antioxidant properties too.

Banana Stressed or anxious? Bananas will deliver a little bit of a blood sugar boost, and has 30% of the day's Vitamin B6, which helps the brain to produce serotonin (the chemical responsible for regulating and maintain mood balance), which will help you to get through any stressful times that little bit easier.

Chamomile Tea Have you got heartburn? Chamomile flowers are renowned for their relaxing and calming qualities. It seems these calming qualities are also experienced by your gastro system too. This tea can help with any digestive inflammation.

Coconut Want to boost your immunity? Coconuts are a fantastic source of fatty acids, including lauric and caprylic acid (which fight bacteria and viruses in your body) and posses an abundance of Vitamins B, C & E. They're also a great source of magnesium, potassium, phosphorous and Iron.

Cabbage Helps with ulcers There is a powerful compound in cabbage called sulforaphane, that stops H. pylori (the bacteria that causes gastric and peptic ulcers) in its tracks, before it even has a chance to get to your stomach.

While we are not suggesting you substitute any medical advice for healing foods, it is rather handy to know that many fresh fruit, vegetables, spices and herbs can offer a number of additional benefits to just satisfying our hunger.
