Go Against the Grain to Improve Your Skin

We all lead busy lives with lots of nagging worries that distract us from paying attention to the more subtle messages that our bodies often give us. Your skin is one of your body's most important messengers, and the condition of your skin will often reflect your stress levels, dietary issues or inner health.

You may notice and respond to the more obvious messages like a sudden acne or rosacea breakout, but if your diet has been the same for many years, you may have accepted your dry skin, fine lines or redness as normal, when in fact your body has been sitting quietly at the back of the class with its hand raised, waiting for you to answer.

A good way to determine if your skin really is in its prime condition is to make some small dietary adjustments for a fortnight or so, and take a few minutes each day to pay proper attention to the way your skin is reacting (and if it reacts well, keep up with the changes!). There is a growing realisation in the community that sugar is no good for you, however another food worth avoiding in your quest for better skin is grains.

It's one of the harder things to avoid in our current society, where bread, cakes, pasta and rice dominate the landscape of available foodstuffs and grain derivatives lurk hidden in the ingredient lists of processed foods, however many people are finding that their skin, health and energy levels are all improved once they stop eating grains.

Why is this the case? Grains contain Phytic Acid, which blocks the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper. Your body needs these minerals to function optimally, and if you're taking supplements but still eating grains, then you may not be receiving the benefits you were hoping for.

A lot of grains also contain gluten, which can damage the microvilli in your small intestine, decreasing your ability to absorb nutrients and causing your intestinal walls to become leaky. This can create many unwanted digestive symptoms.

Another issue is the spike in insulin production that grains cause. The production of insulin is important for processing glucose and storing nutrients, however with the high levels of carbohydrates that we consume these days, our bodies can't cope with the insulin requirement. (This process also leads to a build-up of fat in your stores, if you need any more incentive to kick grains to the curb!)

All of these aspects affect your complexion, as the body uses the skin to release built-up waste (via breakouts) and when being fed with grains, struggles to find the necessary nutrients and minerals to keep it in prime condition. So we end up with dryness, more fine lines, pimples, redness or dermatitis, or even that dreaded phrase from friends, family or colleagues: Oh, you look so tired!

So do your skin a favour and experiment with your diet. Try removing grains and see what happens. There are plenty of resources and recipes on the internet if you're unsure what to eat instead of your sandwich or fried rice; a good place to start is to simply google for recipes from the paleo or low carb communities. But importantly, listen to your own skin and make the changes that it needs.

Relieves arthritis pain and stiffness – Reduces inflammation and improves flexibility for easier movement.

✅ Supports cartilage and joint health – Helps rebuild and strengthen joints for long-term mobility.

✅ Boosts skin hydration and elasticity – Protects collagen and prevents wrinkles for firmer, healthier skin.

Strengthens hair and nails – Encourages strong, healthy growth while preventing brittleness.

✅ Aids muscle recovery and reduces soreness – Helps repair tissues and ease post-workout discomfort.

✅ Supports gut health and digestion – Helps repair the gut lining, reducing bloating and improving nutrient absorption.

Why it works: MSM is a natural source of sulfur, which your body needs to keep joints flexible, reduce inflammation, and support healthy skin, hair, and nails. It helps rebuild cartilage, strengthens connective tissue, and protects collagen, making movement easier and keeping your skin firm and hydrated. Since MSM is lost in food processing, supplementing restores these essential benefits for better mobility, less pain, and overall vitality.

Who is it for? Anyone looking for natural arthritis relief, improved joint health, stronger hair and nails, or enhanced skin and gut function.

How does MSM help with arthritis and joint pain?

  • Reduces inflammation – Helps ease joint pain and stiffness for better movement.
  • Supports cartilage and flexibility – Provides sulfur for strong, healthy joints.
  • Improves mobility – Helps you move with less discomfort so you can stay active.

Many people with arthritis, osteoarthritis, and joint pain find that daily MSM supplementation makes a noticeable difference in their comfort and movement.

100% MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) – A bioavailable, ultra-pure form of sulfur that supports joint health, reduces inflammation, and strengthens hair, skin, and nails.

Packaged in Australia from imported ingredients. Vegan, gluten-free, and free from additives or anti-caking agents.

How to Use

  • Start small: Take ¼–½ teaspoon per day (or 1–2 capsules) to avoid detox effects.
  • Increase gradually: After a week, slowly increase to 2–6 grams daily (5–6 capsules), adjusting based on your needs.

Best taken in the morning: Many find it gives a natural energy boost. Mix with water or juice.

If detox symptoms like headaches occur, reduce the dose and build up slowly.

WARNINGS: If taking strong blood thinners, do not take MSM without your doctor's approval. Not to be taken by children without a health professional's advice.  MSM can also interfere with the accuracy of the blood test for liver enzymes by sometimes producing false positive results. It is recommended you cease taking MSM at least 4 days before these blood tests. You can resume after the test.

How much MSM should I take daily?

  • Start small: ¼–½ teaspoon (or 1–2 capsules) to allow your body to adjust.
  • Increase slowly: Most people take around 1 teaspoon daily (4g).
  • Higher doses may provide extra relief—adjust based on how you feel.

Should I choose MSM capsules or powder?

MSM Powder is the most cost-effective option for daily use at home. It is the best option for those on a larger dose (2tsp+).

MSM Capsules are convenient for travel and great for those who don’t like the taste of MSM powder.

Where does MISMO MSM come from?

MISMO MSM is tested for purity and quality, ensuring you get a clean, bioavailable supplement.

There are two types of MSM:

  • Distilled Ultra-Pure MSM – The gold standard, made using a 4-step distillation process for the purest form.
  • Pure-Crystalline MSM – Created through a centrifuge process, maintaining high purity while being slightly more affordable.

Every batch is independently tested to ensure zero additives, fillers, or anti-caking agents.

What is the science of MSM?

Sulfur is essential for keeping your skin firm, joints flexible, and connective tissue strong. MSM provides a natural source of sulfur, helping your body produce collagen and elastin—the key proteins that keep skin smooth and resilient. Nearly half of your body's sulfur is found in your skin, muscles, cartilage, and bones, making it crucial for overall strength and mobility.
