A recent study published in the Natural Medicine Journal explored the effects of MSM supplementation on hair health. The study found that MSM supplementation was effective in reducing hair loss and improving hair diameter and thickness. The research involved 63 participants and indicated that oral supplements with MSM may enhance the appearance of hair and nails. Based on the results, MSM supplementation was effective in reducing hair loss and improving hair diameter and thickness. Further, it is suggested that MSM may soothe the scalp and support healthy hair by reducing inflammation, which can contribute to healthier hair growth and prevent hair loss.

HOW DOES MSM AID HAIRGROWTH?
MSM acts as a building block for the protein of the hair, keratin, and is known to promote the formation of bonds at the follicle level, strengthening existing hair strands and aiding in the emergence of new growth. This study has shown that MSM can help make hair thicker, increase hair growth rate, and enhance the shine and volume of hair.

Inflammation in the scalp and hair follicles can potentially contribute to dandruff, itchiness, and other conditions that can result in hair loss or stunt hair growth. By reducing inflammation, MSM may soothe the scalp and support healthy hair. In this study, 75% of the subjects noticed their hair to be less brittle after using MSM, and this percentage increased to 87.8% after 120 days. Over 80% of the subject population also noticed increased/improved hair amount and hair thickness. Growth of new hairs was observed by 92.5% of the subjects, and 80% of the subjects declared their hair was more voluminous, indicating a significant role of MSM supplement for providing nutritional benefits to hair. MSM is also known to aid in the production of collagen and keratin, two proteins vital for hair growth. Collagen provides strength, while keratin makes hair less prone to breakage.
This study suggests that MSM supplementation may offer benefits for hair health, including reducing hair loss and improving hair appearance. For more information, you can access the full study in the Natural Medicine Journal.

Hi Denise,
We recommend taking at least 1 teaspoon daily in the morning. Once your body adjusts, you can increase the dose to notice more benefits :)
Hi Laurel,
The benefits of MSM, as referenced in this study, were seen when taken orally. Subjects of the study took one 1000mg capsule of MSM for 120 days and found that their hair was significantly better in density and follicle size. Alternatively, it can be used trans dermally as well, in a spray with water onto the hair. There is less research into the effects of this application of MSM.
I’d like to know too, how do you use MSM for your hair ?
Regarding MSM assisting with hair loss – as it is not clearly explained in this email I would like to know in what form do you advise to take MSM?
