Don't be apprehensive about using a palette! Here's some advice on how you can keep from getting overwhelmed.

Keep it Simple

With your first palette, you are best off picking colours you are familiar with along with some neutral colours; taupes, and browns. This gives you the opportunity for a neutral daytime look as well as a darker, smokier look for the evening.

Build Colour

When working on your eyes, start with lighter colours and then work towards  darker colours. Generally speaking, eye makeup is lighter on the inner corners of the eyes and then colours gradually darken as you move outwards. Lighter shades, such as cream, vanilla or white are typically used on the brow bone to highlight and accentuate that area. Deep eye sockets can be accentuated by blending in a taupe colour in a windshield-type wiper motion.

Get Familiar

It's a good idea to "swatch" the colours when you first get your eyeshadow palette. Swatching is when you apply small lines of each colour in a row on your forearm. Many eyeshadows look a bit darker or lighter on your skin than they do in the pan. Swatching will help you to get a sense of this and also to get an idea of how the colours work with each other.
