Alpha-hydroxy acids occur naturally in various foods and are derived from the citric of fruits, malic from apples and lactic from milk. Whereas, glycolic acid comes from sugarcane. When these acids are applied to skin, the loosening of the outer layer of dead skin cells takes place and they are sloughed away so a natural exfoliating process occurs. New skin cells are then generated leaving behind smoother and healthier complexion. AHAs do their work by by dissolving the lipids that link the skin cells together and are able to penetrate deeply to loosen their bonds.
