Why Choose An Oil Free Moisturiser

First, let's discuss oil-based moisturisers: Dry skin needs to be ‘occluded’, which in simple terms means that your skin needs something to prevent water from evaporating from its deeper layers, and this is why we use oil in moisturisers as it is a really great sealant.
But if you have oily skin or acne, you don't want a moisturiser that has a lot of heavy oils, which is why you should go with an oil-free version. Oil-free moisturisers use ingredients that work the same way oil does, they occlude the skin (provide a barrier) to help seal in moisture. They don't feel as heavy as oil-based moisturisers. Oil-based and oil-free moisturisers also use ingredients called humectants, which pull moisture from the environment instead of sealing in moisture.

The main reason we would choose an oil-free moisturiser is because the our skin is already oily or pimples and acne are a problem, or because we want to avoid mineral oils or animal products.

Oil-free moisturiser is facial moisturiser that does not contain any oil products, common oil used in facial moisturisers include mineral oil, plant oils, coconut oils or animal oils. The oil acts as an emollient to help seal moisture into the skin, and also helps to make the skin feel soft and smooth.

Otherwise, oil-free moisturiser is often exactly the same as other types of moisturiser. Other water-binding ingredients help to keep moisture in the skin, and these may be ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Moisturisers may also contain ingredients to soothe the skin, as well as antioxidants and alpha-hydroxy acids to help repair damage caused by the sun or other environmental factors.

For people with sensitive skin, or who often find their skin to be oily or greasy as the day goes on, oil-free moisturiser can be a great choice for a daily skin treatment.
Those who suffer from acne and pimples are best to avoid oil on the face as oil can clog pores and lead to even more spots.

Very dry skin will probably not respond well to oil-free moisturiser. In that case, it might be a good idea to purchase a richer moisturiser that does contain one of the oils mentioned above, particularly jojoba oil, macadamia oil or olive squalane oil. These are excellent choices for softening dry skin that may even be red or peeling; in addition, dry skin does not tend to be as acne-prone as oily skin, so that is usually less of a concern.

Some people choose to use an oil-free moisturiser in the summer months, and a heavier, more hydrating moisturiser in the winter months to combat dry winter air.

MISMO has an excellent oil free moisturiser that is very popular with men, as they don’t often like the feel of a heavy oil based moisturiser. BOOST is a genuine "Oil Free Moisturiser".
